{"id":1111,"date":"2011-01-21T13:16:04","date_gmt":"2011-01-21T18:16:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/amykazor.com\/?p=231"},"modified":"2024-05-16T11:42:25","modified_gmt":"2024-05-16T15:42:25","slug":"egocentric","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amyhood.biz\/site\/egocentric\/","title":{"rendered":"Egocentric"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>e\u00b7go\u00b7cen\u00b7tric<\/p>\n<div>adj<\/p>\n<div><strong>1.<\/strong> regarding everything only in relation to oneself; self-centered; selfish<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><em>Synonyms: <\/em><\/strong>resolute, firm, dogged, fixed, constant, bold, intent, persistent, relentless, stalwart, persevering, single-minded, purposeful, tenacious, undaunted, strong-willed, steadfast, unwavering, immovable, unflinching, strong-minded<a href=\"http:\/\/faithfilledannualplanning.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/images.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-235\" title=\"images\" src=\"http:\/\/faithfilledannualplanning.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/images.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div>Egocentric is probably not a term anyone wants to hear about themselves.<\/div>\n<p>I\u2019ve read a few blogs and articles lately about this trait in my personality profile.\u00a0 I know exactly where it comes from and can see it when it bubbles up, but in recognizing it I believe I can control it through conscious changes and am <a title=\"Determined Trait\" href=\"http:\/\/faithfilledannualplanning.com\/site\/determined\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">determined<\/a> to do so.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>&#8220;Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won&#8217;t be the victim of needless suffering.&#8221; don Miguel Ruiz, from his best-seller &#8220;The Four Agreements&#8221;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>How can we become immune to the opinions and actions of others when we take things personally because we are in ego?\u00a0 One of the definitions of egocentric is that I have the tendency to perceive, understand and interpret the world in terms of ME and therefore, tend to believe that everyone else sees what I see and believe.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve read that the degree of egocentricity hinges largely on amount of invested interest.\u00a0 With those whom I am emotionally invested is where I have to be most careful, as this is where the degree of egocentricity is greatest.<\/p>\n<p>You will probably agree with me that open-mindedness is a virtue.\u00a0 It is also the antithesis of being egocentric.\u00a0 I like to think I am open-minded and believe that I am in many ways.\u00a0 However, when my mind is made up about something, it can be a challenge for me to remain open-minded to what others are saying.\u00a0 My quest to better this in my own life has led me to add something to my mission statement:\u00a0 <strong>&#8220;I have a self within that can and does look at all sides without loss.&#8221;<\/strong> This is something I will be consciously working on each day.<\/p>\n<p>We are all egocentric in many ways; these tendencies demonstrate this daily when we:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cforget\u201d evidence and information which does not support our thinking and to \u201cremember\u201d evidence and information which does<\/li>\n<li>think absolutistically within an overly narrow point of view: You ALWAYS, I NEVER&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>think that our beliefs are true because we believe them<\/li>\n<li>feel superior in the light of our confidence that we are in the possession of THE TRUTH<\/li>\n<li>ignore bold inconsistencies between what we say we believe and the actual beliefs our<em> behaviors <\/em>imply, or inconsistencies between the standards to which we hold ourselves and what we expect from others<\/li>\n<li>ignore real and important complexities in the world in favor of simplistic notions when consideration of those complexities would require us to modify our beliefs or values<\/li>\n<li>fail to notice facts or evidence which contradict our favored beliefs or values<\/li>\n<li>over-generalize immediate feelings and experiences\u2013so that when one event in our life is highly favorable or unfavorable, all of life seems favorable or unfavorable as well<\/li>\n<li>fail to notice thinking which has \u201cabsurd\u201d consequences, when noticing them would force us to rethink our position<a href=\"http:\/\/faithfilledannualplanning.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/anonymous3.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-236\" title=\"anonymous3\" src=\"http:\/\/faithfilledannualplanning.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/anonymous3.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"277\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When egocentric thinking is successful in helping us get what we want, positive feelings accompany it.
