{"id":1113,"date":"2011-09-12T01:00:57","date_gmt":"2011-09-12T05:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/amykazor.com\/?p=379"},"modified":"2024-05-16T11:44:49","modified_gmt":"2024-05-16T15:44:49","slug":"how-are-your-people-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amyhood.biz\/site\/how-are-your-people-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"How are your people skills?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How do you present yourself in professional situations?<\/p>\n<p>If you work in an office, you have opportunities\u00a0each day to interact\u00a0with people in a work\/social setting (after work).\u00a0 Those of us who work\u00a0in a\u00a0home office encounter different situations, but much of the same rules apply.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>In the Office:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Watch yourself for talking too much, especially in cubicle areas.<\/li>\n<li>Be sensitive to them, even when you call them from your desk.\u00a0 Ask, &#8220;Is this a good time?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t pop into a colleague&#8217;s personal space and expect to chat with them for a long time.\u00a0 Ask them at the onset of the conversation if they have a moment\u00a0to talk and give them the opportunity to say no or set a time parameter with you.<\/li>\n<li>Be professional and considerate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>After Work, at Happy-Hour:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid gossip<\/li>\n<li>Avoid hot-button issues, especially with people you don&#8217;t know well.\u00a0 Obviously off-limits? Religion, Money, Politics.<\/li>\n<li>Stay informed on current events, books, culture, movies, etc. so you have things to talk about.<\/li>\n<li>When all else fails, there&#8217;s always the weather.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t over do it with the cocktails.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>In the Home-Office:<\/h3>\n<p>These are things that I do to maintain a professional atmosphere:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start and end your workday at the same time each day.\u00a0 Keep scheduled breaks and lunch, so that you are on task and remain effective with your time and resources.\u00a0 This also goes to a consistency with clients.<\/li>\n<li>Go to your office\u00a0ready to work and dressed for the day.\u00a0 I use Skype for business from time to time and need to\u00a0be\u00a0presentable when I have to do a video call.\u00a0 Just because you work at a home office doesn&#8217;t mean you should be in your pajamas all-day, every-day.<\/li>\n<li>When calling on clients, etc. remember schedule appointments when possible, and ask clients, etc., if they have time to talk when you call on the fly.\u00a0 Be as respectful of their time as you are of your own.<\/li>\n<li>Have a door that can close and lock (if you have small children) from both the inside and out.\u00a0 This will keep your private calls private and the noise from the others in the house out of your head and work.<\/li>\n<li>Create boundaries and standards.\u00a0 Work when it&#8217;s work time and play when it&#8217;s play time.\u00a0 Be clear with loved ones up front on what your work schedule is and what your availability is during those hours.\u00a0 Communication and respect is key here.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-382\" title=\"cartoon\" src=\"http:\/\/faithfilledannualplanning.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/cartoon.jpg\" alt=\"Stay Out of my Office Cartoon\" width=\"280\" height=\"178\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do you present yourself in professional situations?
